It is the single largest and most diverse collection of hobby wines assembled annually under one roof. Experienced judging panels examined each wine using the UC-Davis 20-point wine scale, evaluating appearance, aroma, taste, aftertaste, and overall impression. Entries were awarded gold, silver, bronze, and best of show medals based on the average score given by the judging panel.
The Orange County Wine Society, in conjunction with the OC Fair, has sponsored the OC Fair Home Wine Competition since 1976. This competition is open to all amateur home winemakers in California. It is one of the largest amateur home wine competitions in the USA. The judging is double-blind, and the scoring is based on a modified 20-point scale from UC Davis.
